Question of the week: favorite sounds

Do you listen to music when you run? What is on your playlist?

Or perhaps you prefer the sounds of nature? Or your own footsteps? Or chatting with your running partner or pace leader?

What are YOUR favorite running sounds?

  1. Nature sounds are nice, even the wind. I don’t listen to music when I’m outside because I’m concerned about being aware of my surroundings. There are some weirdos out there. 😦 What I absolutely don’t want to hear are leaf blowers. Argh!

Inside on the treadmill is another story. I like to listen to upbeat synth or even 80’s stuff. Sometimes I’ll listen to recorded books if I’m just doing a long walk and don’t need to concentrate on my training schedule.

  2. Not a big fan of music while running. My footsteps are the only music I need to enjoy a run.

  3. I love to mix it up. Being in tune to my surroundings – hearing the sounds of nature (wind, birds, etc.) or having something good in my ears. It was very hard for me to learn to run without music; as my breathing can be heavy, even when I am relaxed and not over-exerting myself. Who wants to hear that? Now (thanks to Coach Valerie who said no one can use earphones during training runs (yes, I considered no longer being a pace coach for that reason), I can actually be at peace with no music. However, I love my tunes… I may decide to go upbeat or mellow. Never thought I could run to mello jazz. I also enjoy pop (Michael Jackson, Maroon Five, John Legend); Rap (Kanye West, Drake) and Rock when I want to kick it up a moment. Surprisingly, I have started not liking to run with music too intense. It raises my anxiety and impacts my ability to stay in tune with my body. Mostly, running without headphones has taught me the joy of listening to others. I love running with Deirdre, Wanda and Valerie. They always have entertaining stories to tell and before you know it, the run is over. (-: In turn, if no one is talking, I start running my mouth. I hope folks know just to tell me to be quiet if it does not work for them, or as I see others do, just move ahead of me. (-:
