The Road to Recovery – The Update

I’m sure by now, most of you know that back in November, I was in a car accident that left me with a fractured ankle and some rather jittery nerves.  For the past three months, I have been sporting a giant boot the size of a small Third World country  and longing for the day that I could rejoin the club. Well folks, you’ll be happy to know, I’ve made a full recovery on the ankle and I’m looking forward to getting back out there with you guys and doing it all over again!

Wait, did I just say that??

When I first started this blog back in April of last year, I had one goal and one goal only: Fit in the dress.  As time went on, the importance of the dress was overshadowed by an even bigger goal which was to challenge myself to just keep going. Week after week I whined and complained. And complained and whined some more. And by the end, I was getting better, but I still didn’t love it. Well I’m hear to tell you, you never miss your water… I’d get the emails about club activities and updates about the training programs and it would be painful to know that everyone I came into this program with, was still running, still progressing and leaving me in the dust. Right before the accident, I had run my first EVER 7 miles.  Hold up, let me say that again. SEVEN MILES!!!  I never dreamed I would finish 3 miles, let alone 7. I was so proud of myself and grateful that no one let me quit.  I could see the progress. My breathing had dramatically improved. I had way more energy. And surprisingly enough, I started to, dare I say it, LIKE IT!   One of the first things I said to the doctor when I found out that my ankle was fractured was, “I’m a runner. Will I run again?”  I think I jumped out of my own body and looked at myself and said, “Who are you?”  At one point there was talk that I might need surgery and that keeping the ankle straight in the Robo Boot was key.  For the first month, I slept and showered in that boot always keeping in the forefront of my mind that a) I didn’t want surgery, and b) I need to hurry up and heal so that I can run again.

Six months. That’s how long I had been running. I didn’t expect to get past the Running Start Program. But I did. And then I signed up for the 10K with plans to do the 10 mile training and beyond.  And I would have.  And I will again.  In the beginning, I resisted. Every coach who ever ran with me will tell you that. But I now worship at the running altar.  Runner’s World is my holy book and my hymnal consists of what ever is on the iPod that will keep my legs moving and the road behind me. I’m a convert. I’m a runner.  And I’m coming back!

  5. Wow, I loved your message, and yes it was a message to everyone not to give up. There have been plenty of people who tell me that they can’t , and you know what I’ve said – uh yes you can… A little belief in yourself goes a long way … and some gentle pushing by your coach helps too!
