Celebrate the new year at Great Lengths!

  • WHAT: Great Lengths 2010 Fun Run
  • WHEN: Jan. 1, 2010 NOON (registration is 11 to 11:45 a.m.)
  • DISTANCES: 2010 Fathoms (2.28 miles) or 2010 Rods (6.28 miles)
  • WHERE (NOTE VENUE CHANGE): Herbert Wells Ice Rink/Ellen Linson Pool (5211 Paint Branch Pkwy, College Park, MD 20740)
  • COST: Free! There is no registration fee. This is a club fun run, but non-member guests are welcome.
  • THE SCOOP: A club tradition is the Great Lengths Race at noon on New Year’s Day. What are the “Great Lengths”? Well they are distances of 2010 fathoms and 2010 rods to celebrate the New Year, and to shake off any cobwebs in the head from the previous evening’s parties. A fathom is 6 ft. and a rod is 16.5 ft., so the race distances are a choice of 2.28 miles or 6.28 miles, respectively. The races will basically consist of out-and-back on the Northeast Branch Trail.

The assembly point will be in the parking lot of the Herbert Wells Ice Rink/Ellen Linson Pool off Paint Branch Parkway, the site of the summer farmers market. This is across the street from the former 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant and traditional registration and finish line of the Women’s Distance Festival 5K. There is plenty of parking, and the ice rink building and rest rooms will be open on New Year’s Day. There are traditional prizes for the first three female and male finishers in the 0 to 49, and 50 years and over age groups. Timing/results tabulation courtesy of the Wright family. Refreshments will be served.
  • CAVEATS: So that the maximum number of attendees can participate in the race, there will be no course marshals or any mid-course water stop. The 6.28 mile runners are urged to carry their own fluid supply. We will of course have water at the finish line.

    Congratulations Fall 10K Trg Participants!!

Sunday, December 13, 2009 the Fall 10k Training Program completed their program by running in the 10k Bread Run. I couldn’t have been prouder!! It was a perfect day to run, and when I say perfect, I meant perfectly awful day to run. However, the weather didn’t discourage our participants to much – well just a little. It was raining, cold and muddy, but they persevered!! !!

And, for those participants that don’t like to get water in their face while they run – Well they got a lot and did a great job!!!

Congratulations 10k training participants- Way to Go!!!
