Great Lengths Race – New Years Day

by Bill Radcliffe

Here’s a great way to kick off your running and fitness program in 2008 – come participate in the Great Length’s Race at the Glenn Dale Community Center Noon on New Year’s Day.

In honor of the New Year you have a choice of running 2008 Fathoms or 2008 Rods. The Fathoms translate to 2.3 miles, which adds 500 yards to a basic 2 mile run. If you want to run longer, 2008 Rods on the WB&A Trail comes out to 6.28 miles (about 150 yards longer than a 10K run). You don’t have to worry about retiring early New Year’s Eve; starting time is conveniently set for 12:00 Noon, with registration commencing at 11:00AM. If you are hung over, this would be your best medicine!

This is a fun run. Families are welcome, and there is no registration fee. We will have refreshments and modest age-group prizes for men and women 16-49 years and 50 years and over.

The MNPPC Park Police are co-sponsoring this event with us. Although the Community Center building will be closed, the staff has been helpful, and they are graciously providing a portable toilet for the event.

Directions are easy. From Greenbelt and vicinity drive on Greenbelt Boulevard toward Upper Marlboro. After Good Luck Road it becomes Glenn Dale Boulevard . Keep going and you will see the entrance to the Glenn Dale Community Center opposite the fire station. If you reach Route 450 Annapolis road, you have gone too far.

Coming from the south, proceed north on Enterprise Road , cross Rte. 450 Annapolis Road, and look for the fire station on the right and Glenn Dale Community Center on the left. From east or west turn north on Glenn Dale Boulevard from Annapolis Road . Once in the Community Center head to the parking lot on the left alongside the splash pool.

Hope to see you all there!

  1. Hi Bill, Emily, and Don,
Laurie has talked me into going with her next Tuesday. Since even walking 2.3 miles is probably foolhardy for me at this point, what can I bring/do at the finish line to help?

  2. Hey Runners!
I won’t be joining you for the New Year’s day Great Lengths, however I hope to convince a few friends to run around Philly on Tuesday morning for the Mummer’s parade… see this website for those who are unfamiliar with the event: (

I wish everyone well for the race and I will be out at Greenbelt Park Saturday January 5th to lead a 6 mile run in training for the club challenge!

    Best Wishes for 2008!
