UMD track workouts

On April 26 and May 10, the Tuesday night track workouts will meet at the Wells Ice Arena parking lot, in College Park since the UMD track is not available those evenings.

Since we run by time, not by distance, even without track access, we can still do the workouts listed on the track page.

Question of the week: Carrying cell phone on runs

It’s always a good idea to carry your cell phone just in case of emergency (although we hope you aren’t texting and running :-).

A PGRC member is looking for an armband holder for her Blackberry, and so asks:  How do you carry your phone?  — arm band, pocket, waistpack?

We discussed running accessories last year and there were some good product suggestions, but does anyone have anything new to add?  Please add your comments and help out your fellow runners.

Congratulations to all who participated in the 2011 Springburst 8k.  Kudos to event directors Cass Logan and Kim Ossi van Brecht and all of the many race volunteers.

PGRC – Weight Watchers Walk-It 5k

PGRC was selected by the RRCA to host the Weight Watcher Walk-It 5k.  The non-competitive walk will be held on Sunday, May 22, 9 am, at Lake Artemesia, off Paint Branch Parkway in College Park, MD.

Register for the 5K walk

On April 16, PGRC will sponsor a free, 6-week walking program. Participants will meet at Lake Artemesia at 8 am on Saturday mornings (details will be announced later on the PGRC website).

NEW LOCATION for Saturday’s Springburst 8k

Hi runners – because of the (ever more) likely government shutdown, Greenbelt Park will be closed this weekend and we are unable to hold our Springburst 8k at this location. However, your dedicated fellow runners weren’t going to just cancel this race – it’s a tradition and a part of the Maryland RRCA Grand Prix series! So your tireless teammates have come up with an alternate location (with a big thanks to the Greenbelt Parks & Rec department) – and one known well by PGRC runners: Buddy Attick Lake, where we hold our summer race series.

Packet pickup and race day registration will be at the Greenbelt Youth Center (99 Centerway) – enter the building and head to the back right corner of the building (we’ll post some signs as well) – from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. The race time remains at 9 a.m.

Parking is available in multiple spots in that area (see map below).

The route will consist of three laps around the lake, with an extra jog out onto the pretty peninsula each time to make it an 8k (see below). Bill was kind enough to go out with the measuring wheel today to confirm a good route and our head course marshal Chris mapped it out for everyone to see how it will work (note you run straight ahead once you hit the lake, running clockwise). Also view it on Map My Run: http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/31188116/.

I hope you all will come enjoy the run cause we’re making the best of it. (And run your frustrations out about the government shutdown while you’re at it!)
